post-wedding ceremonies

traditions that follow after the wedding day

varovar (8th day anniversary)

Varovar is the 8th day anniversary celebration after the wedding. It is an important post-wedding ritual in Parsi tradition where the bride visits her parents' home after spending the first week at her in-laws' house.

the bride's preparations

On the Varovar day, when the daughter comes to her parents' house from Sasru, if there is a new set of clothes, she should wear them. This symbolizes prosperity and her new status as a married woman.

dinner and return to in-laws

The girl's family should send the daughter and the Jamai home, after dinner. If convenient, Vevai and Vevan should also be invited to this special dinner.

When they go back after the dinner, pendas should be put in varovar-ni tamdi on which a red cloth (enough for a small baby dress) and a coconut are put, and is decorated with a garland.

If they don't want this, a box of sweets and cash should be given instead.

mandavsara ritual

After Varovar, the mandavsara-nu plant and other flowers/garlands etc. of the wedding day, should be put into the sea. This marks the formal conclusion of the wedding ceremonies.

significance of varovar

Varovar symbolizes the continuing bond between the bride and her maternal family. It reassures the bride that while she now belongs to her husband's family, she still has a place in her parents' home.

This ceremony also helps strengthen the relationship between the two families as they share a meal together and exchange gifts of sweets and blessings.
